How we analyse an accident

• We start from official investigation reports published by the competent authorities. We link to the report and give the date we read it.
• We say only what the report says. Where it leaves something unclear, we say so.
• The COLREGs rules we link to the incident are our reading of the case, not a conclusion of the report, and we label them as such.
• Each rule links to the course lesson that explains it.

What we do not do

• We do not publish the names of the people involved.
• We do not assign blame or replace the decision of a court.
• The 3D reconstructions are illustrative: they show the sequence described in the report and do not reproduce the incident in detail.
• The articles are for general information and do not replace the rules in force or the official report.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, write to us from the contact page. We correct the article, and the update date reflects it.
